Resistance Bands vs. Free Weights

There are die-hard weight training gurus out there who will tell you that free weights are THE method for building lean muscle. They claim that no other method of exercise or training can take the place of free weights. With these gurus, I must disagree. While I can't lay to claim to the guru-territory, I have used both free weights (which I really do enjoy) and resistance bands. They both have their benefits.

For people who don't have a lot of free space, resistance bands can be a God-sent when you are ready to start an exercise routine, but don't have the space to set up bulkier gym equipment. The resistance bands are light, and can be stashed just about anywhere. Some resistance bands come in sets, giving you a variety of resistance levels to work with. Other sets also include some sort of storage case or bag. You can easily store your resistance bands in the closet, under the bed, or behind the living room chair. Another option is storing resistance bands over a coat hook or something similar. This give you easy access to them and will remind you to use them frequently.

For apartment dwellers, free weights and other home gym equipment may not be suitable because they can be noisy. Dropping any weight plate or dumbbell on the floor can make a downstairs neighbor come beating on the door. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, when working on machines or benches, working your muscles to failure can cause you to make a lot of noise with the clanging of the machines. Resistance bands, on the other hand, won't unleash the raging lunatic neighbor from hell if you drop one or just can't complete another rep.

Money wise, resistance bands are a great investment. A minimal investment in resistance bands can get you started on your way to a leaner, healthier you. Well constructed resistance bands will last a long time and give you consistency in your workouts. The old adage "you get what you pay for" rings true here, as well. Cheap equals cheap. Period.
